Driving Anxiety

Frequently Asked Questions...

Who is Drive Therapy for?

Drive Therapy is for anyone who has a driving phobia or driving anxiety and wishes to conquer it in a safe and structured way.  It is mainly aimed at drivers that hold a full driving licence however, some of the techniques learnt during the course can benefit learners too.

I mainly work with clients with low to mild driving anxiety.  If you feel that your driving anxiety is severe and that you are completely unsafe when you drive, it is your responsibility as a driver to speak to your GP or DVLA for guidance.

I think I may have a driving phobia / driving anxiety but I’m not completely sure?

Most people suffer from some sort of anxiety with certain situations when driving.  If you feel like the anxiety is effecting your driving skills or you are avoiding driving (or a situation in the driving task) then Drive Therapy will benefit you.  If you are still unsure, feel free to contact me to discuss your situation.

Do I have to book a Drive Therapy Day Course initially?

Even though it’s not compulsory to book a day course initially, we highly recommend you do.  The day course is not a whole day of driving.  It is structured in a way to give you plenty of time and opportunity to get you comfortable with using the methods and techniques, to help you manage your driving anxiety.  Many clients have fed-back to me how much more confident they feel after the initial Drive Therapy day course and are then happy to set themselves some new driving goals, without the need for anymore sessions.  Obviously, each individual is different and some clients prefer continual support, which is of course another option available after the initial day course.  Information regarding the Drive Therapy Day Course can be found here.

I am keen on booking a Drive Therapy Day Course however, I cannot commit to a whole day.  Are there other options?

Absolutely.  I understand that clients may have other commitments and booking a whole day out of their diary can be troublesome.  Therefore the Drive Therapy Day Course can be split into two parts.  Information regarding the two part Drive Therapy Day Course can be found here.

Will I be forced into difficult driving situations?

No.  The Drive Therapy Sessions are very client centred.  We set your goals together and you will not be pressured into doing anything you don’t want to.  The beauty of Drive Therapy is that the course in structured around your goals and requirements, no matter how big or small.

How many sessions will I need?

Everyone is different and every phobia / anxiety is personal to the individual.  For some, an understanding of where the phobia / anxiety may have developed, can be enough to get them driving confidently again.  For others with deep rooted phobias, it may take longer.  Just like any other form of self development, what you put in, is what you get out of the sessions.

I have a driving test coming up and I’m very anxious about it.  Can you help me?

Drive Therapy is mainly aimed at full licence holders, as part of the course encourages the client to go out and practice on their own.

However, I can recommend the following training resources to help with your driving test nerves.  Click here for more information.

I think Drive Therapy can help me but feel a little uncomfortable talking about my situation.  Do I need to disclose information about my past?

It is not always necessary to talk about your past during sessions however, our past can help us understand why we feel a certain way about things at present.  Remember, as a life coach, I have had a lot of experience of listening to clients without being judgemental.  I’m here to help you combat your driving phobia / anxiety.

Why do Drive Therapy sessions cost more than traditional driving lessons?

Drive Therapy sessions are completely different to traditional refresher / driving lessons.  The course is unlike any other type of Driver Training in the industry.  Drive Therapy sessions are conducted by a specialist driving instructor who is also a qualified Life Coach, CBT and Behavioural Change specialist.  Over nine years of development has gone into the Drive Therapy Course.

How do I pay for my Drive Therapy sessions?

You can pay for your sessions by cash or bank transfer.

What is required from me, the client?

Only one thing, your commitment!  Just like most things worth conquering in life, there is no “quick fix” to combating your driving phobia / anxiety.  This is why you must be totally committed to the course.  You will be asked to practice techniques and a driving plan will be designed for you to complete in between sessions.  It is essential that you are willing to take responsibility for overcoming your driving phobia / anxiety.

What documents do I need to produce for my first Drive Therapy session?

If you are having on-road sessions in my tuition vehicle, you need to bring your driving licence with you to your first session.  For on-road sessions in your own vehicle, you must also produce a valid insurance certificate (certifying that you are insured to drive this vehicle), a valid MOT certificate (if applicable) and your vehicle must have valid road tax.  I also recommend that your vehicle has a minimum of half a tank of fuel / fully charged (electric vehicles) for the session.

For all on-road sessions, you must be able to read a number plate from a distance of 20.5 metres.

Can I reschedule or cancel my Drive Therapy session?

Of course you can.  I kindly ask for 48hrs notice should you need to cancel or reschedule a Drive Therapy session.  Unfortunately, if this notice is not given, 50% of the session fee will be charged.  If this notice is not given on a second occasion, the full session fee will be charged.

Are you still taking precautions to prevent the spread of Covid-19?

Yes, a list of precautions we are taking can be found here.
