Welcome to Drive Therapy®
My name is Carmine and I’m a Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency Approved Driving Instructor (DVSA ADI) and a member of the Institute of Advanced Motorists. I’m also a fully qualified Life Coach, CBT (Cognitive, Behaviour, Therapy) and Behavioural Change specialist. By combining my skillsets, qualifications and experience, I have developed a unique and specialist driver training course known as Drive Therapy®. This course is dedicated to combating all sorts of driving phobias and driving anxiety.
Driving Phobia and driving anxiety are very common. Many people suffer from some sort of driving phobia but are not totally aware of it, as they are still able to drive as part of their day to day lives. However, for some a driving phobia or driving anxiety can stop them from driving completely.
A Driving Phobia can manifest itself in any part of the driving task. Examples of driving anxiety include; dealing with other road users, feeling rushed by vehicles behind, driving on motorways, dealing with complex junctions or roundabouts and driving at night. This list is not exhaustive as a driving phobia can develop in any part of the driving task.
Once a driving phobia or driving anxiety has developed it can cause a number of symptoms whilst in the anxiety provoking situation. These include; heart palpitations, difficulty breathing, intense sweating and a feeling of wanting to “leave or escape” the situation. These symptoms then cause avoidance (of the situation) which makes the phobia stronger.
The cause of a driving phobia can vary. Normally, driving anxiety is caused by a traumatic experience which acts as a trigger when you are in similar situations. An example of this could include being involved in a car accident either as a driver, passenger or pedestrian. Another common cause of driving phobias and driving anxiety is learnt behaviour (subconsciously) from others, from your past.
Drive Therapy® works in a completely different way to traditional refresher driving lessons. Traditional refresher lessons work on the client’s car control and driving skills. Which is important however, I focus on helping clients challenge their self limiting beliefs and negative thought process that the client has learnt and attached (subconsciously) to the driving task. We challenge these negative thoughts and beliefs by using a combination of Life Coaching, CBT and Behavioural Change techniques to help the client regain focus on the driving task at hand. This is all done in a structured, safe and controlled environment.
Being free from your driving phobia and driving anxiety is both liberating and empowering, as you begin to enjoy driving again! Everyday shores like going shopping or taking the kids to school by car are no longer events to be fearful of. Just imagine how much easier your life will be when you are able to get into your car and drive without that constant anxiety playing in the background.
This website is your first step to overcoming your driving phobia or driving anxiety, so feel free to browse the pages at your own convenience to gain a real understanding of what Drive Therapy® can do for you!
